How to Stage a Sit-In!!!!

Sometimes an issue comes up that demands your attention. You want to say something about it, but writing a letter doesn’t feel like enough. You want to make sure that the people in charge see you, and hear what you’re saying. A sit-in is a great way to make sure you’re SEEN. Just what is sounds like, a sit-in is about gathering people in the place where decisions are being made, and drawing attention to your cause through your physical presence.

To stage a sit-in:
1. What do you want to say? Where do you want to say it? For example, if you’re protesting the burqa ban in France, you could stage a sit-in in front of the French Embassy in Toronto
2. Plan a date & time!
3. Get the word out: tell your friends, start a facebook group and/or event page, make a flier and put it all over the city!
4. If you think the sit-in is going to be BIG, make sure to tell the police (unless you have reason to not want to work with the police - maybe you’re protesting the police themselves! - in which case, keep yourself safe!) so that they are aware of what is happening.
5. Get some media coverage - make a press release (see below for info on how to do that!) & send out emails to local news and media stations.
6. DO IT! You’re READY! Have fun & get your word out through nonviolent protesting!

Some tips:

- could be combined with a significant date - for example, staging a sit-in about Aboriginal land rights on Canada Day
- permit may be necessary - email your city for details
